09/03/2011: Reports from 05/03/2011

Last Saturday saw 40 matches played, most of them in the leagues, though the Richard Knight Cup kicked off with 4 matches, while VEC 3rds were unfortunately knocked out of the LFA Junior Shield.  The following summary of the action was sent to the Star for publication on Tuesday (08/03/2011):

VEC overcame the disappointment of their 3rds losing out 1 - 2 to Banagher Utd in the 4th round of the LFA Junior Shield - Pat Meghan was the scorer - when their other two sides recorded good wins. The firsts knocked out Aston Village in the opening round of the Richard Knight Cup on a 4 - 0 scoreline thanks to the efforts of Paul O'Sullivan, Simon Roche, Joey Byrne and Alan

VEC 2nds and Ashwood , currently first and second in Div 2, had a terrific tussle on Saturday  with the home side just shading the verdict by 2 goals to 1. Visitors Ashwood took the lead through Jim Ennis but Sicco Lansu evened things up shortly afterwards. Derek Lordan then had a penalty saved by the VEC keeper before VEC themselves took the spoils when Desar Hysa scored his penalty.

San Marino benefitted from their dead ball game as they saw off Balally Celtic 3 - 2 in the Richard Knight Cup. With Balally taking an early lead, Marino needed two penalties from Paul Egan to go in 2 - 2 at the break. The game was deadlocked until 85 minutes when a Jeff Hawkins free-kick snatched the win for Marino. In the same competition, Terenure had a 3 - 0 half-time lead against Sandyford Rovers and weren't extended in the second half to finish as 4 - 0 victors. The winning marksmen were Ross Dawson, Ger Barry and Myles Jordan (2).

In the Premier, Brayzil defeated Clontarf Athletic by 2 - 0 to stay on top. Alan Dutton got the first on the half hour mark following good work from Ray Jaudzems with Neil Doyle (jnr) volleying the second four minutes later. Trinity Corinthians kept pace with the leaders with a 2-1 victory over FC Ailesbury and their goals came from experienced defenders Garreth Dardis and Dave Battigan. Ardmore Rovers shared the points with Sportslink with Conor Flannery opening and closing the scoring in the 2 - 2 draw.

Noel Hanney's brace on 44 and 70 minutes restored Amber Celtic to winning ways at the expense of Brayzil 2nds in Div 1 while John Kennedy's 30 yard drive earned Strand Utd 2nds a 1-1 draw with Schalke Rovers.

In 2B, Brian Duke opened the scoring for Terenure 2nds on 3 minutes with Sean Wynne getting the equaliser for St Mary's 2nds on the stroke of half-time. Patrick Denton restored Terenure's lead with a header from a Brian Bass free kick midway through the second half though Stephen Devlin grabbed an equaliser 5 minutes later to conclude the scoring.

The race for honours is very tight in 3A with almost ten teams within shouting distance though Moorfield have a lot of games in hand to come off the pace in 10th!! Sportslink 3rds upset Allenton with a good finish after going one down. Colm Fitzpatrick levelled the tie and Michael Craig grabbed the winner for a very valuable three points and leaves one point off the new leaders Springbank.
