11/03/2010: Reports from 27/02/2010

UCFL August 2009

The following are some brief summaries of last Saturday’s (06/03/2010) action in the UCFL:

In the Richard Knight Cup, Strand Utd firsts had a tough enough encounter against their seconds but eventually managed to advance to Round 2 on a 2-0 scoreline, thanks to a goal in each half from Willie Bell and Richie Dingley.

Sandford Athletic progressed to round 3 of the MMI Cup with a 2 - 0 win over Brookfield Celtic. The game was scoreless at half-time and it was only in the last fifteen minutes that Sandford managed to secure the win with goals from Caoilinn Murphy (75) and Glen Trehy (80).

Gary McNally, Fintan Fairmichael and Dermot Cullen delivered the goals for Stedfast Utd 3rds in their 3 - 2 victory over Ashbourne Celtic in the 3rd Round of the Sidney Bedlow Cup.

The title race for Premier honours took another twist when defending champions VEC inflicted the first league defeat of the season on Orchard Celtic. They took the lead when Anthony Dunne's free-kick was powered home with a diving header from Stephen Van Loon on 12 minutes and the lead was doubled ten minutes later when Joey Byrne found the net.  Orchard just couldn't find a way through and Brian Ward added an insurance goal midway through the second half to move Dave Spring's charges into second place.

Although Joseph McCabe gave Lower Crumlin the lead on 10 minutes, a Justin Dutton hat-trick took all the spoils for the improving Brayzil.  Elsewhwere, goals from John Cosgrove and Adrian Whelan gave Glasnaoin maximum return against Lucan Utd.

Barry Meehan and Adrian Eustace were on the mark in St Canice's 2 – 0 defeat of Sandyford Rovers in Div 1.

VEC 2nds had a good 3 - 0 away win over Claremont Rangers with Alan Scullion (2) and Alan O'Byrne providing the firepower.  Amber Celtic defeated Aston Village on a similar scoreline with efforts from Anto Thompson (20), Richard Bergin (55) and Dave Barry (68).

In 2A, Glen Oaks travelled to Tallaght and came away with a 3 – 0 victory over Glenmalure Rovers. Jodi McDonnell hit two, giving him ten goals in four games and an overall total of sixteen for the season so far. Joseph Breslin completed the scoring for Glen Oaks.

Neil Jones is also in good goalscoring form as his two for Seaview Celtic brought his tally to thirteen. Carl Merriman and Brian Brady were on the mark also as Seaview recorded a 4 - 2 over Granada in Div 2B.   Jordan Daly and Morgan Boland provided the winners for Terenure 3rds in their clash against Castle Celtic.

Dollymount seconds jumped over rivals Carton Avenue in Div 3 with a last gasp winner from Aidan Clare's header. Earlier, Dave O'Connor opened the scoring for Dollymount with a converted penalty.
